CNP EPSDT Success Story:

Sandy is a beautiful, 12 month old Caucasian girl who was originally referred to Children’s Nurturing Project for an Infant Mental Health assessment by Solano County Child Protective Services. She was born to term and appeared healthy and had no reported medical issues. However, she was placed into protective custody as a result of Sandy’s positive toxicology for methamphetamines at birth and her parents’ ongoing methamphetamine use. Despite no visible concern in Sandy’s appearance, participation in EPSDT services helped to identify gross motor, fine motor, communication, and problem solving delays in her development (i.e. unable to pull herself up to a standing position, unable to walk along furniture independently, display advanced fine motor skills, etc.). The assessment led to ongoing infant mental health services to ensure optimal growth and development. The foster parents are actively engaged in facilitating Sandy’s development through play based activities and nurturing their relationship with her.

Today, Sandy is able to perform all tasks mentioned above and is preparing to be transitioned into an adoptive home. Without early intervention from the EPSDT program at CNP, Sandy would be at great risk for not developing appropriately due to the prenatal substance exposure and environmental neglect.
